BOSTON (AP) — Organizers of the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge charity bicycle ride say this year’s event raised a record $37 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund. They also say that’s a record for any athletic event fundraiser for charity in the country.

Volunteers and riders for the event gathered in Boston on Sunday to present the $37 million to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for its cancer research and patient care. The total was $2 million more than what the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge raised last year.

This year’s two-day bike event in August included more than 5,200 riders from 36 states and nine countries. The $37 million represents 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar.

The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge has raised $375 million for Dana-Farber since it was founded in 1980.end of story marker
