Mattapoisett, Wareham, and Carver have received grants aimed at protecting and restoring water quality and natural resources in Buzzards Bay and its surrounding watershed. Mattapoisett was awarded $35,000 to purchase 19.5 acres of wetlands and forest in the Mattapoisett River Valley aquifer. Wareham received $20,000 to develop engineering designs for storm-water discharge treatment in downtown Wareham Village, and $3,000 for a real estate appraisal of 28 acres on the Weweantic River as part of a land protection project. Carver was awarded $27,000 to conduct a study of nutrient loss from cranberry bogs to ground water in the Weweantic and Wareham River watersheds. The federal grants are administered through the state Coastal Zone Management’s Buzzards Bay National Estuary Protection Program.
