A group of Foxborough residents will have a truck ready on Foxborough Common on Saturday to collect donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey.
Donations can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The truck will leave Foxborough for New York and New Jersey at 1:30 p.m.
Resident Kris Long, an organizer of Operation Sandy from Mass., lived on Nantucket and one of her friends from there has family in New Jersey, said Foxborough Selectwoman Lynda Walsh, who is also involved in the effort.
“We’ve been in touch with the Facebook group Operation Jersey Strong, and they will be ready to receive our donations and distribute them as soon as possible to folks in need,” Walsh said.
Walsh said use of the truck and gas cards have been donated for the trip, and former selectman Bob Hickey donated money for tolls.
“Many folks have joined our Facebook page, Operation Sandy from Mass., and we’re hoping for a very successful donation drive . . . ,’’ she said.
On the list of needed items are charcoal grills and charcoal, diapers/Pull Ups, batteries/flashlights, sleeping bags, toys and books for non-school-age children, dog and cat food and treats, hand/foot warmers, nonperishable foods, hats, mittens, and warm coats, heavy gloves/work gloves, can openers, baby food and wipes, trash bags and boxes, rakes/shovels, candles and matches, mops and buckets, scrubbers, and cleaning supplies.
Also being accepted for hurricane victims are gift cards to Home Depot, Lowe’s, PetSmart, Stop & Shop, Sunoco, Gulf, Hess, Walmart, and CVS, Walsh and Long said.
The Foxborough group is also collecting school supplies. Anyone who is unable to stop by the common on Saturday can call Long at 508-212-7206 to arrange a dropoff before Friday. The group is also looking for volunteers to help sort and pack the materials.
