Coleman and Sons to remove contaminated soils trail

The city recently signed an agreement allowing Coleman and Sons access to a portion of the Northern Strand Community Trail to remove contaminated soil. The company, whose property abuts the MBTA rail corridor on which the Everett section of the new trail is being built, is required by the state Department of Environmental Protection to remove contaminated soil from its site and the adjoining right of way, according to James Errickson, the city’s director of planning and development. The city, which is leasing the right of way from the MBTA, granted Coleman access in order to work on the railroad bed. Errickson said the soil removal is needed to finish the Everett portion of the Northern Strand, an overall 9-mile trail that is being developed from Everett to Lynn.
