NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a 34-year-old New Bedford has died after his all-terrain vehicle struck a metal support pole for a sign under Interstate 195.

The Bristol district attorney’s office says Richard Pires was riding his ATV in a grassy area under I-195 and off Route 18 on Sunday when the vehicle skidded and struck a pole.

The Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/TdJt8E) reports that New Bedford police responded and performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on Pires before he was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at about 2:40 p.m.
