Ray Andrews has been named clock keeper of the Center School clock, a restored 1898 Seth Thomas weight-driven pendulum variety. The timepiece was at Mattapoisett Junior High School until 1961, when then-student Andrews often helped wind it. Andrews, now the owner of Andrews Compass, spearheaded a fund-raising campaign to pay for repairs. The clock was relocated last summer for public view in a tower, with a plaque outlining its history. The device has automatic windings and a programmable shutoff, so the bell rings only from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A rededication ceremony will take place Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. Andrews is also seeking a “junior clock keeper,” who would be trained to maintain and control the clock. He can be reached at email@example.com or 508-758-3001.
