Voters to decide on Sacred Heart dorm demolition

Monday’s Town Meeting could decide the future of the Catholic school dormitory that was acquired by the town in 1974 and has long been vacant. The building is considered unsafe, and the town has been seeking a way to redevelop the property for years, without success. A Town Meeting article will ask voters to approve a sum from the Community Preservation Fund to demolish the building. Karen Friedman, chairwoman of the Sacred Heart Reuse Committee, said the anticipated $315,000 would cover demolition, landscape architecture, and ground-water testing. The town may seek additional funding in the future to construct playing fields, she said. The dormitory was part of a former boys’ school run by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.
