BOSTON (AP) — State Rep. Joyce Spiliotis (SPIH'-lee-OH-tis) has died at the age of 65.
House Speaker Robert DeLeo’s office confirmed the death of the Peabody Democrat on Thursday. The cause of death was not immediately known but there had been reports Spiliotis was battling cancer.
Spiliotis was in her fifth term on Beacon Hill. She won re-election in an uncontested race in November.
A former Peabody city councilor, Spiliotis served as vice chairman of the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional government, and was also a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.
DeLeo described Spiliotis as a ‘‘down-to-earth, funny and universally liked’’ lawmaker who fought passionately for her constituents.
House Republican Leader Bradley Jones called his Democratic colleage a ‘‘fierce advocate’’ for the casues that she believed in.
