Public input sought on charter school applications

Area residents have a chance to provide state officials with feedback on 11 applications for new charter schools at a public hearing Dec. 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Woburn City Hall, 10 Common St. The hearing is one of eight the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is holding to seek public comments on the applications. They include a proposal by Pioneer Charter School, a regional school in Everett, to open two new schools, one in Woburn and one in Saugus. The Woburn school would serve Medford, Melrose, Saugus, Stoneham, Wakefield, and Woburn, and would have 360 seventh- to 12th-grade students. The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will award new charters on Feb. 26.
