Hearing to examine town’s needs

The town’s Community Preservation Committee will hold a public hearing Jan. 8 to discuss potential uses for funds from the local program. The funds, which are collected through a surcharge on property tax bills and supplemented by a state grant, must be spent on open space, recreation, affordable housing, or historic preservation projects. Committee members are also slated to decide whether to recommend that Town Meeting in May approve spending $24,000 on a database for preserving historical records. The town has about $500,000 in Community Preservation Act funds on hand, said Jennifer Burke, the committee’s chairwoman.
