WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A plan to make twin indoor ice rinks a key component of a plan to revitalize downtown Worcester is getting a cold reception from the Worcester Public Library Board.
The rinks would be developed on the site of a municipal parking lot next door to the library. The Telegram & Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/VV6Pxf) the rinks are included in a ‘‘theater district’’ master plan the city’s been working on.
But library board members say the rinks threaten the library’s viability. Board members say they also doubt the rink will draw people downtown and question whether the facade of the rinks will have much visual appeal.
In general, the board has praised the master plan, which includes pedestrian-friendly walkways, better lighting and new development.
