Child wounded in shooting finds joy in singing
OXFORD, Mass. (AP) — Owen K. Benway, who was shot and wounded in July by his father, is recuperating slowly, including relearning how to eat following three brain surgeries.
The Telegram & Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/U582SY ) that as Christmas approaches, Owen is even singing more than he used to.
Owen’s 7-year-old sister, Abigail, was killed by their father, Daryl Benway, in the shooting. The father killed himself after the shootings.
Owen’s mother, Kelleen J. Benway, says the 9-year-old boy has had physical, speech and psychiatric therapy. She says get-well signs and contributions to a fund at a local bank have been sent by donors in Oxford and across the country.
She said Owen sings Christmas carols frequently and makes up his own songs. She hopes to get him into a music program.
