The Big Picture: Russia in color, a century ago
Photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire from 1909-12, using a specialized camera to capture shots in rapid succession using different filters. The Library of Congress acquired the original glass plates almost 65 years ago, and the images are stunning.
