Foundation will recognize school contributors

The Peabody Education Foundation recently announced the establishment of the George Peabody Legacy Award. Starting this year, the award will be bestowed annually to one or more persons — alive or deceased — who have embodied George Peabody’s spirit of giving through their work in or for the schools, according to David Gravel, a city councilor at large and the president of the foundation. A 19th-century philanthropist after whom the city is named, George Peabody was a significant supporter of education. “We kind of envisioned it as the educators’ hall of fame,” Gravel said. “We do a good job honoring sports people and political people, but we don’t do a great job honoring people who do stuff within the schools that really make a difference in kids’ lives. This is our opportunity to recognize them.” The foundation is accepting nominations for this year’s award through Feb. 15. On Feb. 18, George Peabody’s birthday, the group plans to announce the recipients, and on May 2, it will formally honor those selected at a City Hall ceremony. To submit a nomination, go to the foundation’s website, www.peabodyedfoundation.org.
