HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) — The state fire marshal’s office says a woman has died in a condominium fire in Haverhill.
The death Monday is the eighth in seven fires so far this year in Massachusetts.
The woman’s name has not been released. The fire is being investigated by Haverhill fire and police, and state police working with the state fire marshal and Essex County district attorney.
A Gloucester woman also died in a weekend home fire.
The Boston Globe reports there were 37 fire fatalities last year, according to preliminary figures from the state Department of Fire Services. Annual totals listed on the DFS website for the previous five years range from 61 to 36.
State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan is urging people to keep a 3-feet area clear around heating appliances and to check that smoke alarms are working.
