The Middleborough Historical Association has planned a 150th anniversary celebration of the marriage of Middleborough native Mercy Lavinia Warren Bump to Charles Stratton, more commonly known as General Tom Thumb, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the public library on Feb. 10. The association will display its considerable collection of special artifacts and pictures relating to the much-publicized event, dubbed “the fairy wedding” and held in New York City on Feb. 10, 1863. The couple had met as performers in P.T. Barnum’s exhibitions a few years before they were wed, and they continued to perform in those extravaganzas for many years afterward. Middleborough Historical Association members Daniel Thompson and Dorothy Thayer have planned a multimedia presentation of the couple’s courtship, wedding, reception, and wedding trip as part of the upcoming celebration. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
