BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) — A Cape Cod man now has remembrances of a father who left when he was a boy after receiving four medals for his father’s World War II service.

The Cape Cod Times reports (http://bit.ly/WX7P9x) that Michael Zakrzewski received the awards Tuesday during a ceremony in Hyannis.

Army Cpl. William Zakrzewski left after a divorce when his son was in seventh grade. He died in 1987.

His son had only a wedding photo, a war bonds receipt and an old Social Security card, but it was enough to learn his father’s history.

A key break was when a federal worker clandestinely provided the location of his father’s gravesite. That allowed the Army to find William Zakrzewski’s honors, including three bronze service stars.
