Parishioners at a Roman Catholic church in Westport are offering a $1,300 reward for information leading to vandals who broke into the church and stole several holy items. The vandals broke into St. John the Baptist Church March 2 and fled with its tabernacle, the receptacle that holds the Communion hosts, after breaking a large cross and vandalizing a shrine. Cash was left untouched. Police have so far been unable to come up with a suspect. The Rev. Leonard Hindsley told The Standard-Times that he does not think the vandals were motivated by profit, but by a desire to harm the parish.
