Senior center on solid ground, mayor says

The city is on firm legal footing with its plans to build a senior center in Ward Park, according to Mayor Arthur Vigeant. The city had received a letter from a lawyer, hired by members of neighborhood group opposed to the project, stating that the land is legally protected from redevelopment. The letter prompted the city to hire an independent land-use lawyer, who sided with the city, and in a letter to the City Council president, Patricia Pope, Vigeant said the issue has been “put to rest.” Michael Berry, an aide to Vigeant, said the city will press on with its plans, and officials hope to break ground sometime in the fall.
