Malls install security cameras to help cut down on crime

Two major malls, in Braintree and Wrentham, are stepping up security through new camera surveillance in response to persistent crime in recent years.

Wrentham Village Premium Outlets last fall installed 10 security cameras to monitor common areas and parking lots after the Planning Board voted to allow a Black Friday sale only if the new cameras were added.

South Shore Plaza in Braintree is in the process of installing cameras, which are due to be operational by the end of the month, to monitor common areas after the town pushed for the change.

The Globe reviewed Police Department records of incidents for the two shopping centers as well as Legacy Place in Dedham going back to January 2011.
