Henry S. Stone of Dover spent decades in the insurance business, retiring in 1976 as president and chief executive of Commercial Union Insurance.

“He paid attention to everybody and made everyone feel special,” said his daughter Jeannette Reynolds. “That was his strength.”

Mr. Stone, who died May 15 at 97, studied engineering at Harvard College. Along with making furniture, he built houses in Rhode Island and near the Vermont’s Mad River Glen, where he liked to ski down the challenging trails.

A former selectman in Dover, where he lived for 67 years, Mr. Stone was always fond of new innovations. He wrote a self-published autobiography on his computer when he was in his 80s, and rented a Segway two summers ago when he was 95.
