Homeless housing bid decried

A proposal to turn a historic former fire station on Beacon Street in Newton into studio apartments for chronically homeless people has raised the ire of many residents in the Waban neighborhood, who fear the housing will bring a bad element that will put their children in danger and fracture the calm of their quiet village.

Emotions ran high at meeting on the proposal Thursday, with residents occasionally shouting over speakers, and bursting into loud rounds of applause and hoots after coments, both for and against the project. But while many said they were flatly opposed, others called for open minds, and said fears of violence or break-ins were overblown.
