School Committee members approved an increase in high school athletic fees to $225 a year, from $150, next school year. A cap for families was set at $450. All sports will fall under the fee, except for ice hockey, which will cost $400 a year for varsity (with a family cap of $800), and $325 for junior varsity (family cap of $650). Students involved solely in afterschool clubs and activities will still pay the $150 annual fee; those involved in both sports and clubs will have to pay only an athletic fee. According to School Committee chairwoman Shannon Hume, the increased fees will generate an additional $65,250 in annual revenue, with $14,720 to fund a strength trainer for student athletes. While the Braintree Athletic Association will no longer provide a $30,000 annual grant, Hume said, the group will continue to raise money for high school programs.
