Town moves to single-stream recycling

The Department of Public Works has issued a new trash and recycling collection guide, which includes several changes. One is that the town has moved to single-stream recycling. This means residents no longer have to separate bottles, cans, and jars from paper and cardboard. All recycling should be placed in the household’s new, green recycle cart. The carts were delivered to homes last month. Both trash and recyclables should be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on collection day. To keep the trash bins clean, debris should be placed in plastic bags. However, plastic bags should not be used to hold recyclable material. At least 3 feet of space must be left around each cart to allow room for the automated collection arm. Lids must be fully closed. Excess trash must be placed in official Billerica overflow bags, sold at O’Connor Hardware and the local Market Basket.
