NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — A strict dress code for New Bedford District Court that banned bare midriffs, excessive cleavage, tank tops and other revealing outfits has been lifted just a few weeks after it took effect.
Judge Bernadette Sabra, after speaking Wednesday with state court officials, said the code was dropped because of the lack of a unified policy for all state courts. Currently, the only clothing banned in state courts are T-shirts that say ‘‘No Snitching.’’
Sabra says dress will now be left to the discretion of individual judges.
Sabra tells The Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/14nHogj ) she implemented the dress code on June 24 to compel people to show respect for the court and the judicial process.
She says she’s seen too many people come to court with ‘‘it all hanging out and it’s not pretty.’’
