When Edwin Alemany reached adolescence, the learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder that already made school such a struggle for him began competing with depression, mood swings, and verbal outbursts. Soon, he began hearing voices, and spent his teens in and out of state custody and psychiatric hospitals, according to his family and to records kept by his parents. Speaking publicly for the first time since Alemany was taken into custody for the alleged killing of Amy Lord and for attacking two other women in less than 24 hours, relatives describe him as deeply troubled but not violent to others. They pray he will be exonerated, and they hope the 28-year-old they know as a loving son, sibling, and father will get the psychiatric care that he has largely refused since taking charge of his own health as an adult.
