Mayoral quest for Latino votes is fraught with challenges

Sandra Nijjar is the kind of voter everyone running for mayor of Boston wants.

The El Salvador native is deep in the fight to improve education at East Boston High School, where 65.5 percent of the students are of Latin-American heritage. She did her part in her neighborhood’s effort to combat crime. And she has joined the resistance to a casino in her beloved East Boston, which she said would crush struggling families.

Nijjar is active. She is passionate. And unlike many residents of Latino descent in the city, she can vote. Still she is not certain who to vote for.

Latinos’ ability to go to the polls in Boston is mired in a thicket of immigration status.
