The group led by John and Roberta Stagnone that is trying to restore the downtown State Theatre will receive a state grant that will enable it to develop a business and marketing plan for the property. State Representatives William Galvin of Canton and Louis Kafka of Stoughton and state Senator Brian Joyce of Milton spearheaded efforts to include $50,000 for the theater in the Massachusetts Historical Commission budget. The nonprofit Friends of the State Theatre has entered into a 20-year lease agreement for the building, which opened in 1927 and has been vacant since the Stoughton Cinema Pub closed in 2007. Stagnone, a former selectman, said the plan is designed to measure the impact the theater’s opening might have on the downtown, compared with similar renovations in Norwood and Foxborough.
