Somerville officials are reviewing overnight field trip policies after three students were arrested in the rape of a high school freshman at a team-building retreat for city athletes.

A Student Travel Safety Committee that will include students, school staff, and outside experts is being formed to review the current school policies and procedures and recommend changes, according to a joint announcement on Wednesday from Mayor Joseph Curtatone and Superintendent Tony Pierantozzi.

An annual trip to Camp Lenox in rural Otis for 165 members of the school’s football and soccer teams Aug. 24 and 25 sparked outrage after three soccer players were arrested last week and accused of forcing a freshmen player to his knees and raping him with a broomstick.
