Local officials are seeking volunteers for the Greater River Valley Medical Reserve Corps, a program that helps address public health needs in both emergency and nonemergency situations. The corps is based in Andover and serves Andover, North Andover, Lawrence, Lynnfield, North Reading, and Wilmington. It is one of 46medical reserve corps statewide. The Andover unit participates in local health programs by assisting with public health clinics, staffing first aid stations at community events, and assisting in emergencies. Volunteers may come from both medical and nonmedical professions. Members include nurses, pharmacists, and health educators, as well as residents who have a strong desire to serve others. Volunteers have the opportunity to attend training sessions and may accept or decline a deployment as they see fit. The medical response corps was extensively used during the H1N1 flu outbreak in 2009 and 2010 to staff flu clinics .
