Keith Smith, a two-time club champion at Franklin Country Club, won the Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship earlier this month on his first try. The 55-year-old Smith did it the hard way – making birdies on four of his final seven holes to forge a first place tie, then winning a three-man sudden death playoff on the third extra hole. He was one of just two competitors to post under par rounds at the two-day event at Haverhill Country Club. His victory earned Smith exemptions for several MGA 2014 tournaments, including the Mass. Open, Mass. Amateur and Mass. Mid-Amateur and a five year exemption for the Mass. Senior Amateur.“So I’m planning to play a lot more competitive golf next year,’’ said Smith, who outlasted former champions Jack Kearney and Tom Bergeron in the playoff.
