Charter schools in Westborough and Newton won’t go forward

Neither of the proposed charter schools in area communities -- a Westborough school with accelerated science and math teaching as well as language immersion, and a Newton Chinese language immersion school -- won approval to move ahead in the quest to become real.

Instead, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education invited the potential founders of seven other charter schools—from Lynn, Fall River, Andover, Springfield and Fitchburg—to submit full applications. Proposals that are approved will be awarded charters next February.
