Dispose of medications safely Saturday

This is a summary. To read the whole story subscribe to BostonGlobe.com

Belmont police and the US Drug Enforcement Administration will host a prescription drug take-back event next weekend to help cut down on the abuse, theft, and environmental implications of the medications. Officials said old and surplus prescription drugs can be stolen or misused, especially by family and friends, and improper disposal can send them into the groundwater, causing a potential health hazard. The free collection will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Department of Public Works yard at 37 C St. Prescription drugs, except liquids, can be dropped off for safe disposal with no questions asked, and officers will be providing drive-through service so that residents will not have to get out of their vehicles. The Police Department is also reminding residents that there is a prescription-drug collection kiosk in the police station’s lobby that can be accessed 24/7. For more information or to find a list of additional collection sites, visit www.dea.gov or contact Lieutenant Kristin Daley at kdaley@belmontpd.org.
