The Town Council last week approved spending another $698,688 this fiscal year — on top of the $139.6 million budget approved in June — with most of the additional money used for field and park improvements. Mayor Sue Kay indicated that $400,000 from the recently increased meals tax would pay for improvements at Stella Tirrell, Weston, Great Hill, and Great Esker parks, as well as the Ralph Talbot amphitheater. The extra money also will pay for maintenance equipment for the schools, transportation for homeless students, and a three percent raise for non-union employees that takes effect next Jan. 1, according to town auditor Richard Swanson.
