Officials seek residents for trash program

Local officials are seeking residents who wish to participate in Winchester’s Save Money and Reduce Trash pilot program at the town’s transfer station. The deadline to sign up for the one-year program is Nov. 15. Rather than paying the standard annual fee of $190 per household for trash disposal and recycling, participants will pay a reduced fee of $50. They can bring single-stream recyclables to the transfer station at no additional cost, but all of their trash must be taken to the transfer station in trash bags that they will be required to purchase from the town. A 14-gallon bag will cost $1; a 33-gallon bag, $2. The Board of Selectmen approved plans to launch the pilot program late last month. In all, 500 households will be selected at random to participate. Those who are chosen will be notified in December; the program will begin Jan. 1, 2014, and end Dec. 31, 2014. To volunteer, visit www.winchester.us and sign up online.
