Changes have come to an assisted-living facility in Hingham, with Allerton House adding a specialized area for people with Alzheimer’s disease. Opening during National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the new area features 16 apartments and includes 24-hour care, medication management, activities for residents, and staff trained in dementia care. The program is much needed, said Paul Casale, vice president of Welch Healthcare & Retirement Group, considering the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that more than five million Americans have the disease. “In response to increased demand on the South Shore for memory-care services, we are pleased to offer a distinctive, new Memory Care Allerton House Assisted Living Neighborhood in Hingham,” he said in an e-mail. The facility joins others in the South Shore, including ones in Braintree, Duxbury, Marshfield, Quincy, and Weymouth.
