The nonconference women’s basketball matchup last week in Bethlehem, Pa., between Villanova and host Lehigh was barely a minute old when, on a defensive switch, the Burton sisters, Kayla and Kendall, glared into each others’ eyes.
As Kendall, a sophomore shooting guard at Villanova, rose to launch a jumper, “I was praying ‘Please don’t let the shot go in, right in my face!,’ ” said Kayla, a freshman point guard at Lehigh.
The two had never been on opposite teams before, though the siblings had often gone at it one-on-one growing up in Hopkinton and Newton.
This was different: The two Newton South grads, both starters, both averaging nine points, both teams undefeated and over 5,000 fans in Stabler Arena, including their family members.
