Longfellow Bridge to close this weekend to all traffic except MBTA buses

The Longfellow Bridge will be closed this weekend to all traffic except MBTA buses due to ongoing construction, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said.

Buses will replace MBTA Red Line trains from the start of service Saturday to the end of service Sunday from Park Street Station to the Kendall/MIT Station, stopping at the Charles/MGH Station in between, MassDOT said.

Halting traffic on the “salt and pepper” bridge is necessary for a MassDOT contractor to perform work in close proximity to Red Line tracks, MassDOT said in a statement.

The bridge will still be open to pedestrian, bicycles, and emergency response traffic. Cyclists are asked to walk their bikes on the sidewalk, MassDOT said.

Drivers can detour using Memorial Drive westbound, make a U-turn at Ames Street to access Memorial Drive eastbound to Land Boulevard and Charles River Dam Road to reach Leverett Circle. Truck restrictions are in place. A second detour route is using Third Street and Binney Street to reach Land Boulevard, MassDOT said.

The Longfellow bridge is being rehabilitated over three and a half years for $255.5 million. The program will ensure that the bridge meets modern codes including ADA accessibility, improve structural integrity and capacity, and create a safer travel configuration, MassDOT said.
