Two men who allegedly committed a string of supermarket robberies since late October were arrested after a witness provided police with key identifying information after their most recent stickup in Sturbridge.
Jonathan Tufts-Raymond, 25, of Worcester, and Krystian Gubernat, 23 of Grosvenordale, Conn., were captured by police Tuesday after a witness provided a partial license plate number and description of the getaway car in an armed robbery of a Stop and Shop supermarket in Sturbridge on Monday in which the suspects got off with about $800. Roughly two hours later, the duo also attempted to rob a teller at the Worcester Credit Union at 4:05 p.m., police said.
“A helpful witness in the [Stop and Shop] identified a silverish-tan four-door sedan and provided a partial registration,” said Sturbridge Police Lieutenant Mark Saloio. “The description went out to area agencies and the next morning an officer in Spencer spotted a vehicle matching the description.”
Police stopped the two men in the vehicle matching the witness’s description at about 9 a.m. Tuesday in Spencer. After they were pulled over, Tufts-Raymond and Gubernat fled on foot, State Police said.
Both suspects were captured with assistance from State Police and K-9 units. One dog allegedly sniffed out one of the suspects’ .45-caliber handgun, which was buried under a pile of leaves near his place of arrest.
Tufts-Raymond had become the prime suspect in a string of armed supermarket robberies in Worcester, Shrewsbury, and Sturbridge. Tufts-Raymond was charged with four counts of armed robbery. He also had outstanding arrest warrants for additional armed robberies, Worcester police said.
Gubernat was charged with five counts of armed robbery and one count of attempting to commit a crime, which was armed robbery, Worcester police said.
Police said the investigation into the robberies was ongoing, and more charges could be filed.
Both men are to be arraigned today in Worcester District Court.Jasper Craven can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @Jasper_Craven
