RUTLAND — Investigators Friday night were searching a house here for clues in the suspicious death of a woman whose body was found in the burning building hours earlier.

Neighbors reported heavy smoke coming out of the two-story Colonial at 2 Joanna Drive and called 911 at about 7 a.m., fire officials said.

The three-alarm fire was deemed suspicious not long after fire crews extinguished the flames, said Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.’s office.

Investigators had not identified the body Friday night. The state medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the woman’s death, said Paul Jarvey, a spokesman for the district attorney.

The cause of the fire had also not been determined Friday night.
