A three-family home in Lynn was destroyed Tuesday when a fire broke out on the second floor, displacing 16 residents, fire officials said.

Residents on the second floor of the Chestnut Street home smelled smoke and saw flames at 11:18 a.m., said Lynn District Fire Chief Stephen Archer.

The fire grew to three alarms. A cause has not yet been determined, Archer said.

The wood-frame home houses a family on each of its three floors, Archer said.

Eight adults and eight children will be staying in hotels and were provided emergency funds for food, clothing, and coats, the American Red Cross said.

No one was injured. The fire is under investigation, Archer said.
