A 56-year-old man fell to his death after smashing through a locked eighth-floor window in a state-run mental health facility Wednesday, authorities said.

A staff member of the Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center in the South End saw the resident go through the window moments after hearing a loud crash in a community room, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said.

The window could not be opened from the inside, according to authorities.

The man was killed after landing on the roof of a three-story structure attached to the building, near an outdoor recreational area for residents of the Department of Mental Health facility.

Security staff called 911 immediately after the incident, which took place around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the man’s death but do not believe the matter is criminal.

The man, whom authorities did not identify, had been a resident of the facility since 2008.
