A woman was discovered clutching a ledge in the Lowell Canal early this morning, and firefighters rescued her through the stubborn cold in temperatures below 20 degrees.
Firefighters responded to a bridge over the canal on Dutton Street in Lowell at about 8 a.m., where the woman was struggling in the water.
Firefighters employed ladders, a mechanical basket, and rope to lower themselves down to the woman, said Deputy Fire Chief Robert Destrempe.
The rescue was over in 20 minutes, and the woman was transferred to Lowell General Hospital for treatment of hypothermia and frostbite.
Two firefighters were also taken to the hospital as a precaution for hypothermia, but were doing well this morning, Destrempe said.
Officials were not aware of how the woman got into the water.
No further details were immediately available.
