The architectural firm Dore & Whittier Inc. has been chosen to conduct a $60,000 schematic design for Scituate’s public safety building. Selectmen are to finalize the contract during their meeting this Tuesday. One of nine to submit proposals for the project, the firm is also working on the Gates Intermediate School project. Selectman John Danehey said the design will look at the size and scope needs for combined police and fire dispatching in addition to an emergency command center. “You can’t get to a site unless you know the acreage you’re going to need,” Danehey said in an interview. “From there, what is the best location, can they fit, and what would be the best response time from those locations?” During a Nov. 12 selectmen’s meeting, Town Administrator Patricia Vinchesi said 90 percent of the study won’t be site-specific. The town has nonetheless provided three potential sites for the project, including the Ellis Estate, the current police station, and the Purple Dinosaur playground (the former Hatherly School).
