Firefighter ceremony to honor eight local heroes

Eight Gloucester firefighters are scheduled to receive awards Thursday at the annual Firefighter of the Year ceremony on Thursday. Sponsored by the state’s Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, the awards honor firefighters from across the state for acts of heroism. Receiving the awards are Captain Joseph Aiello, Charles Scola, Jon Sanger, James Burke, Robert Rivas, Frank LeClerc, Paul Hudson, and James Hannon. The ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in Kresge Auditorium at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. “This award is a reflection of the professionalism and dedication of our personnel,” Fire Chief Eric Smith said in a prepared statement. “We are thankful and proud of these firefighters, knowing it takes a great team to provide this level of service to our community.”
