A Dracut woman will serve 90 days under house arrest after being found guilty in Lowell District Court of negligent operation of a vehicle. The charge stems from a 2011 accident in which 23-year-old Melissa Rich drove an Atlantic Express van off River Road, knocked over several mailboxes, and crashed into a set of cement stairs. The passengers in the van were special needs adults traveling to their group home in Billerica; all were taken to a hospital for evaluation and one suffered a broken hip. Rich was found not guilty of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury; her one-year jail sentence for negligent operation was suspended while she is on probation.
