Around 100 eighth-graders had their attention fixed on Abington High’s Sam Thompson as she took the hardwood at the Frolio middle school gymnasium midway through last January. The hoops player was giving an orientation on transitioning to high school. She was volunteering for YouLead, a school program designed to “promote good decision-making,” and education in the community. The group works alongside the Jeff Coombs Foundation, named posthumously for the Abington resident killed on American Airlines Flight 11 on Sept. 11, 2001. Thompson is in her fourth year with YouLead. The center/forward has parlayed her newfound vocal skills and boosted confidence to her role as captain of the varsity basketball team.
