The School Committee voted Dec. 17 to appoint John P. Phelan as the district’s new superintendent. Phelan, who is the assistant superintendent for curriculum and personnel in the Milton school system, will start his new role in Belmont on July 1. Phelan is enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Massachusetts Boston, and is in line to receive his degree in June. He was one of three finalists interviewed by the School Committee and members of the community earlier this month as the successor to Thomas Kingston, who has been the district’s interim superintendent since 2011.
