A fire that started in a Christmas tree caused significant damage today to a three-story apartment building in Dorchester, displacing eight adults and two children, authorities said.
Firefighters responded to 86 American Legion Highway at 12:10 p.m. for a blaze that was spreading up the building. A resident of the second floor was dragging her Christmas tree out to the outdoor porch when a branch accidentally turned on a stove burner, said Steve MacDonald, spokesman for the Boston Fire Department.
“The tree was fairly dried out after being in the apartment for several days, so it ignited pretty quickly and the fire spread right out the window and up to the third floor,” said MacDonald. Full story for BostonGlobe.com subscribers.
