Bill Linehan of South Boston has been elected president of the Boston City Council.
Linehan, considered one of the body’s most conservative members, beat Councilor At-Large Ayanna Pressley, popular among progressives, with 8 of the council’s 13 votes. Cheers erupted in the council chamber at City Hall after the vote.
Recalling growing up in the D Street housing development in South Boston, Linehan thanked his mother and said nothing worthwhile comes easy.
“You have given me this honor, and I am forever grateful. I will not let you down,” Linehan told the council.
Linehan fended off an 11th-hour bid for the job by Pressley.
